About 350 km from Colombo, Ampara is located on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. The 2004 Tsunami had a disastrous effect on the area, leaving it barren. However, after all these years, the town has admirably picked itself up.
Ampara is dotted with lakes, paddy fields, palm groves, forests etc. Its chief attractions include Senanayaka, a reservoir, Irrakamam, well-known for its wildlife and Deegawapi temple. A rare tropical fish is found in the beaches of Olluvi. Animal lovers will have a treat at the wildlife sanctuaries and aviaries.
Though it is an under-developed place with no quality accommodation facilities, its pastoral charm is unparalleled.
Ampara (Sinhalese: ??????, Tamil: ???????) is the main town of Ampara District, governed by an Urban Council. It is located in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, about 360 km from the capital city of Colombo.
