Located at a distance of 206 km from Colombo, Anuradhapura is the capital of the North-Central province in Sri Lanka. Founded in 4th century BC, Anuradhapura served as the capital of Sri Lanka till 8th century AD. With several historical monuments, Anuradhapura is an archaeologist’s delight. Consisting of the largest dagoba in Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura is a prominent Buddhist pilgrimage. A dagoba is a structure that enshrines the holy relics or the physical remains of Lord Buddha or the objects used by him. Some of the prominent tourist attractions of the city are Thuparma Dagoba, Ruvanveli Dagoba, Abhayagiri Dagoba, Jetavana Dagoba, Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, Isurumuniya, Samadhi Buddha, Mihintale, Kuttam Pokuna and Awkana.
Although according to historical records the city was founded in the 5th century BC, the archaeological data put the date as far back as the 10th century BC.[1] Very little evidence was available about the period before the 5th century BC (i.e. the protohistoric period), though excavations have revealed information about the earlier inhabitants of the city.
