Covering an area of 1386.6 sq km, Gampaha is located in the western province of Sri Lanka. In the year 1978, Gampaha was separated from Colombo district and made a distinct administrative district. Gampaha is surrounded by Kegalle district in the east, Puttalam and Kurunegela districts in the north, Columbo in the south and Indian Ocean in the west. Negombo and Gampaha are the major cities that come under this district. Gampaha city is well-known for Ayurveda and Pandit Gabriel Perara Wickramarachchi, the winner of ‘Ayurveda Chakravarthi Raja Vaidya’ award. Some of the important locations in Gampaha district are Bandaranaike International Airport, Kelaniya Raja Maha VIhara temple and the Kelaniya University.
Gampaha (Sinhala: ????? [?gam?paha]; Tamil: ?????? [gam ?paha]) is a major city in Gampaha District, Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is situated to the north-east of the capital Colombo. It is the sixth largest urban area in Western Province, after Colombo, Negombo, Kalutara, Panadura and Avissawella.
