Hambantota is situated in the Southern province on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. The city occupies an area of 2593 sq km and has a dry climate. Hambantola town is the capital of the district. It has the centre of salt production and also houses the administrative headquarters. Beliatta, Ambalantola, Tissamaharama, Ranna, Walasmulla, Weeraketiya, Hungama and Tangalle are some of its prominent towns. The district is well-known for its agricultural production. Paddy and swidden cultivation are popular here. A grain named kurakkan and corn are commonly cultivated in this district.
Its sprawling beaches make it a pleasant place for a visit.
Hambantota (Sinhalese: ?????????, Tamil: ?????????????) is the main town in Hambantota District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. This underdeveloped area was hit hard by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and is undergoing a number of major development projects including the construction of a new sea port and international airport.
