If one takes to the south along the coast of Colombo, Kalutara is the first major town that one will come across. Kalutara’s exotic beach resort is its greatest attraction. The city marks the confluence of Kalu Ganga River and the ocean. The northern beach is much more popular than the southern one and is thus more frequented by tourists from all over the world. Once famous for its spices, Kalutara is today known for its pristine coconut palm vegetation, mango orchards and fine basket ware. The beginning of Kalutara is marked by roadside stalls of coir rugs, basket ware and reed mats.
Kalutara (Sinhalese: ?????, Tamil: ?????????) or Kalutota is a large town in Kalutara District, Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is also the administrative capital of Kalutara District. It is located approximately 40 km (25 mi) south of the capital Colombo.
