Founded in 1936, Kilinochchi is one of the 25 administrative districts in Sri Lanka, situated in its Northern Province. The town of Kilinochchi serves as its headquarters. It still comes within the electoral division of Jaffna. Agriculture forms the main occupation of this district. A large number of people migrated from Jaffna for getting government grants and started rice cultivation. During the civil war, people were made to migrate to foreign countries like Europe, Cananda, America etc.
Kanakampikai Kulam, Iranamadu Tank, Kilinochchi Kulam are major sources of irrigating the paddy fields.
The town also has a defunct station of the railway system of Sri Lanka.
Kilinochchi (Tamil: ??????????, IAST Kilinocci, Sinhalese: ??????????) is the main town of Kilinochchi District, Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Kilinochchi is situated at the A9 road some 100 km (62 mi) south-east of Jaffna. It was the administrative center and de facto capital of the LTTE (Tamil Tigers)[1] until 2 January 2009, when troops of the Sri Lankan Army recaptured the city.
