Kurnegala is a bustling commercial city nestled between hills, about 42 km away from Kandy. Coconut plantations and rubber estates surround this city. It is often called a crossroads town as it is juxtaposed on roads between Puttalam to Kandy and Anuradhapura to Colombo.
The historical charm of this city is its chief attraction. Its high altitude offers a panoramic view of the scenic surroundings. The city has got a lake with a rocky background at its centre. The hugest of the rocks measures almost 32 m and is called Etagala or ‘Elephant Rock’. It has a statue of Buddha on it.
Kurunegala (Sinhalese: ????????, Tamil: ?????????) is a major city in Sri Lanka. It is the capital city of the North Western Province and the Kurunegala District. Kurunegala was an ancient royal capital for 50 years, from the end of the 13th century to the start of the 14th century. It is at the junction of several main roads linking to other important parts of the country.
