Located 226 km away to the north-west of Colombo, Munnar is popular for the historical ruins like Portuguese fort built in 1658. It was later reconstructed by the Dutch. Pearl fishing was its chief source of livelihood in the past.
Its flora and fauna also draw attention. It is home to over 3600 species of plants and animals. The flora includes a rare African tree called Baobab. The tree was brought to Sri Lanka by Arab sailors as camel fodder. Due to resemblance in climate, i.e. dry and hot, this tree thrived in Mannar. The other species of plants found in Mannar are thorny shrubs, mangroves, endemic herbs etc. Wildlife includes various species of reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, birds etc.
Mannar (Tamil: ???????, Sinhalese: ???????), formerly spelled Manar, is a large town and the main town of Mannar District, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. It is governed by an Urban Council. The town is located on Mannar Island overlooking the Gulf of Mannar and is home to the historic Ketheeswaram temple.
