Matale is a hill town about 142 km from Colombo and 26 km from Kandy. Historical ruins and pastoral beauty form its greatest attractions. The ancient temple of Aluvihara is of great importance in Buddhism. It is this rock temple where Buddhist canon and commentaries, which were orally transferred till then, were written for the first time. The beautiful spice plantations along the highway of Matale-Dambulla are sheer delight to the eyes. At the paddy fields, one can see farmers using traditional methods of farming even today.
Its historical attractions comprise Dambulla caves, Aluwihara caves, Sigiriya caves etc. Agricultural regions adorned with spice, vegetable, rubber and tea plantations can be seen at Wiltshire which surrounds the town.
Matale (Sinhala: ?????) (Tamil:???????) often written as Mathale (pronounced Maathalé), is the largest town of the Matale District of the Central Province, of Sri Lanka. It is 142 kilometres (88 mi) from Colombo and near Kandy. Surrounding the town are the Knuckles Mountain Range, the foothills were called Wiltshire by the British.
