Located in the southern coast of Sri Lanka, the district of Matara serves as the terminus of the coastal railway. The city’s scenic charm attracts tourists from all around. About 145 kilometers away from Colombo, Matara is one of the largest Sri Lankan cities. Nilwara River, the lifeline of the city, has produced sprawling stretches of paddy lands, spice plantations and tea estates, which contribute to the scenic charm of the city. The beaches surrounding Matara are the favorite hangout destination of the foreigners. Matara was earlier dominated by the Dutch and the Portuguese. Its major attractions include Matara Fort, Weligama, Dondra or Devinuwara, Mulgirigala Rock temple, Tangalla etc.
atara (Sinhalese: ????, Tamil: ???????) (originally Mahathota) is a major city in Sri Lanka, on the southern coast of Southern Province, 160 km from Colombo. It is a major commercial hub, and it is the administrative capital of Matara District.[1] It was gravely affected by the Asian tsunami in December 2004.
