Located on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, this town is a well-known fishing settlement which served as an anchoring harbor of vessels, transporting goods between Jaffna and Colombo during the early 20th century. Mullaitivu served as an army base of LTTE and has been witness to several battles of the civil war since 1983.
This area was also brutally destroyed by the Tsunami in 2004. Hence, it is comparatively an underdeveloped place today. However, with the end of civil war, Mullaitivu is showing possibilities of improvement. It will probably develop into a full-fledged tourist destination within a few years.
Mullaitivu District (Tamil: ???????????? ???????? Mullaitt?vu M?va??am; Sinhalese: ??????? ?????????????) is one of the 25 districts of Sri Lanka, the second level administrative division of the country. The district is administered by a District Secretariat headed by a District Secretary (previously known as a Government Agent) appointed by the central government of Sri Lanka.
