Called the dry zone of Sri Lanka, Puttalam marks the arrival of Prince Vijaya about 2500 years ago. The place has got such a nickname because it is here where the prince’s vessel got ashore. Puttulam got its name from the Tamil word, “Uppuththalam” which means a place where salt is produced. Its rich history draws tourists from all over the world. The hospitality of the inhabitants also makes it a pleasant place to be visited. However, its chief attraction still remains its diverse flora and fauna. The beaches and the lagoon in Puttalam are equally fascinating for the tourists.
Puttalam (Sinhalese: ???????; Tamil: ????????) is a large town in Puttalam District, North Western Province, Sri Lanka. Puttalam is the administrative capital of the Puttalam District and governed by an Urban Council. Situated 130 kilometres (81 mi) north of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka and 95 kilometres (59 mi) north of Negombo.
