Ratanapura is well-known as Sri Lanka’s gem-mining city. It is about 103 km away from Colombo. Ratanapura ranks among the top five gem producing cities on earth. Familiar gems like citrine, alexandrite, spinel, zircon, garnet, tourmaline, aquamarine, moonstone, amethyst, topaz, cat’s eye, ruby, sapphires etc. can be found in abundance over here. There are also the exotic ones like kornerupine, andalusite, enstatite, ekanite, sinhalite, patite etc.
When in Ratnapura, one can visit Sinharaja Forest Reserve. It is the last surviving authentic rainforest tract in the area and is an absolute delight for nature lovers. One may also visit the temple of Maha Saman Devale and the annual fair or Perahara, which is held during July-August.
